What Is Readability?

Readability is the quality of being easy to read and understand. For example, you can read a report about how an essay’s length affects its readability but you may not understand it at first. To understand it, you may need to read it two, three, or more times, depending on how easily you can grasp the information. Based on this explanation, we can say that the readability of AI writing is a measure of how easy it is to read a piece of content that was written by AI (artificial intelligence) software.

Why Is the Readability of AI-generated Text Important?

If using AI for content writing or content marketing, you need to monitor the readability of AI-generated writing for several reasons. Let's discuss three of these reasons.

Readability Affects Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Readability has a ripple effect on the performance of content on search engines. When your content is readable, it's easier for someone to skim through the text and find the answer that they're seeking. If you include internal links in the web page that the site visitor first reads, they'll be encouraged to follow those links to check out content on your other web pages.

When next they search for something on Google and your site appears among the search results, they'll want to check your site first. Why? They once found your content to be easy to read. Over time, Google will raise your site's ranking.

In 2020, some researchers at ResearchGate did a study on the readability scores of websites that published medical content relating to osteoporosis. The image below summarizes the results of the study.

The researchers found that the first 10 websites that appeared among search results had high readability scores. Meanwhile, the content on less reliable websites had much lower readability scores.

Improving Readability Helps to Humanize AI Content

For you to understand AI-written text, you need to read it more than once and pay keen attention to almost every word. Contrarily, humanized AI content is easy to read. Although enhancing readability alone can't make ChatGPT undetectable, you shouldn't skip the step. It goes a long way in making AI-generated content — from simple social media posts to long articles — more enjoyable.

Also, bear in mind that unlike human-written text, readable AI content may not always bypass AI detectors. However, a piece of text drafted by an AI writer has a much higher chance of bypassing AI detection tools if it's readable.

Your Readers Won't Miss out on Your Quality Content

If your target audience is proficient readers, their passion for reading may push them to read your content, no matter how hard it is to read. But, what if they're among the other 95% of adults who aren't proficient at reading? You risk them missing out on what you have to say.

You Avoid Plagiarism

When used for content creation, ChatGPT and other AI models are prone to plagiarism. As you put AI-generated content through the steps on the journey to readability, you significantly change its wording and structure. Consequently, you're more likely to end up with unique content.

How to Make AI Writing More Readable

Humanize AI-generated Text

One of the things that you have to do when humanizing AI-generated content is to improve its readability. You simplify the way the information is presented and remove repetitive information. When necessary, you may delete asterisks and hashtags which AI tools use to indicate headings and subheadings. This process is time-consuming, so we usually automate it with StealthGPT's bypass tool.

Here’s how you can use the tool too:

  • Open StealthGPT's Bypass app.

  • Access the undetectability tone and mode settings by clicking the gear icon.

  • Select the “standard” or “casual” tone and the “low” or “medium” undetectability mode.

  • Paste the AI-generated content into the input box and click “Generate.”

Here's an example of AI-generated content that we humanized with these settings:

The generated output is just like human-written content. It's high-quality and fluff-free.

Most importantly, it's easy to read. If you want, you can tweak the humanized text but it's usually good to go.

In addition to its Bypass tool, StealthGPT has another feature that could help with making content — whether AI-generated or not — readable. This feature is called Chat with Stealth.

Chat with Stealth is an AI chatbot that responds to questions and carries out tasks such as summarizing text. You can also chat with PDFs using this feature. When you send a PDF to Chat with Stealth and it “reads” the file, you can ask it questions based on that PDF and it'll respond. You can also tell Chat with Stealth to humanize the response.

Prompt an AI Tool to Make the Text Readable

Feed the piece of AI writing to some of the best AI paraphrasing tools such as Jasper, Quillbot, or ChatGPT. Prompt the software to rephrase the text to increase its readability. Here's a list of ten prompts that help to convince an AI content generator to make AI content readable:

  • “Make this input easier to read.”

  • “Simplify the terms used in this input.”

  • “Rewrite this in a way that [define or describe your target audience] would easily understand.”

  • “Make this text more fluent.”

  • “Paraphrase this, retaining these terms [list the terms in the text that you don't want the AI writing tool to replace].”

  • “Make the information in this input more coherent. I want the reader to understand what it says the first time they read it.”

  • “Break this input down a little.”

  • “Rewrite this input using shorter sentences.”

  • “Make this text easusd to understand.”

  • “Let the train of thought in this content flow logically from one idea to the next.”

You might be thinking, “Why don't I just prompt the AI writing tool to create readable content from the outset?” We've discovered that it's more effective to let AI write the content in its default writing style and ask it to rephrase the content afterwards.

Here's a screenshot of two paragraphs explaining why dogs are loyal. We generated the content using ChatGPT, asking it to make the text readable from the outset.

Compare the content in the screenshot above to the output in the screenshot below.

To get the output in the second screenshot, we asked ChatGPT to write two paragraphs explaining why dogs are loyal. Then, we prompted it to make the content easy to understand.

Use Grammar Checking and Proofreading Tools

Please, don't skip this part especially if you rewrote AI-generated content with an undetectable AI tool. Why do we say this? Most undetectable AI software may add grammatical errors and unnecessary typos to AI-generated drafts just to make the content sound more “human.” After all, a main characteristic of human writing is that it's not error-free, yes? It's your duty to catch these errors. You can use a grammar checker like Quillbot for assistance.

To get suggestions that can improve the readability of AI writing from editing tools, you have to subscribe to their premium plans.

Convert Passive to Active Voice

The use of passive voice by an AI writer isn't a bad thing. It's only worrisome when the content isn't engaging the reader in the way you want. Before converting passive clauses to active ones, ask yourself these seven questions:

  • Is the passive voice necessary for context?

  • Is the sentence too wordy or complex?

  • Is the sentence clear and straightforward?

  • Is the passive voice used to hide the subject?

  • Is the doer of the action important?

  • Does the sentence sound natural?

  • Does the sentence fit the surrounding context?

We've put the questions together in this image along with the answers that'll let you know if you should convert passive voice to active.

Your answers to these questions will help you know if you should convert the passive clauses to active voice. If you're using an editing tool, it'll prvoide some suggestions relating to the conversion of passive phrases to active ones. See the screenshot below, for example.

In our experience, editing apps could not highlight all passive clauses in your content. In addition to considering their suggestions, you'll have to check the content yourself to see if you can identify those clauses written in passive voice.

You could also use a specialized passive-to-active voice converter like Sapling, LogicBalls, or Writer. However, these tools limit the quantity of text that you can process per time. Sapling, for instance, can process only 40 to 50 words in one run.

Swap out Complex Words for Simpler Synonyms

While a text containing phrases like “transmute” and “high-level coherence” may be easy for you to read, it may be difficult for your audience to read. But because you find the text easy to understand, you may forget that your audience may not enjoy the same fate.

When editing blogs written with our Blog writer tool, we ask ChatGPT or Chat with Stealth to sift out words that may be too complex for our target audience. We also ask the tools to suggest simpler synonyms. You can try this hack, too.

Explain Jargon and Technical Terms

You may perfectly understand what abbreviations like “NLP” and “ML” mean, but your audience may not understand these phrases. In situations like this, you should either explain these terms or use them in contexts that portray their meanings. For instance, instead of writing just NLP or ML, you could write NLP algorithms or ML algorithms. Better still, write out the phrases in full like: natural language processing or machine learning.

You don't need to go over AI-written text to spot all technical terms and abbreviations you need to explain. After writing the content with a text generator, paste it into ChatGPT, along with this prompt:

“Scan this input for all technical terms and abbreviations that a target audience [define your target audience] would need to be explained. Then rewrite the text in a way that incorporates the explanations of these terms.”

Vary Sentence Structure

AI writing tools can't vary the structures of sentences in a single output. It's either all the sentences are long, medium-length, or short. You'll hardly find an AI-generated output containing a mix of long, short, and medium-length sentences.

So, when you want to vary the sentence structure of AI-written content, don't copy and paste the entire thing into ChatGPT and tell it to vary the sentence structure. Instead, randomly select long sentences, send them to the tool, and ask it to shorten the sentences.

Use Bulleted Lists

Bullet points are generally easier to read than paragraphs. Copyblogger shares five rules for writing bullet points. Brian Clark summarized these rules in 2011. They are:

  • Keep bullet points related to the same theme.

  • Make your bullet points symmetrical, if possible.

  • Don't use nested bullet points.

  • Make bullet points clear and concise.

  • Don't force yourself to make each bullet point a complete sentence.

When writing the list above, we followed all the rules. As the first rule required, we started each point with a verb and stated only rules and nothing else. The second point put it upon us to even out the lengths of our bullet points. We did that. Each point occupies only one line.

We didn't use any nested bullet points. Here's an image illustrating nested bullets in case you weren't familiar with them.

We could have chosen to explain each rule using nested points but we decided to explain the rules in paragraphs. This helped us to maintain the aesthetic quality of the bulleted list. As the fourth rule states, all of our bullet points are straightforward. In this case, all our bullet points were better phrased as sentences. So, technically, we followed the last rule.

Use Readability Calculators

Readability calculators use formulas to measure the readability of text. These formulas in metrics like the number of syllables in words, sentence lengths, the total number of words and sentences used in text, etc. If you're interested in the math, here's a breakdown of the most popular readability calculators and the formulas that they use.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

0.39 x (words/sentences) + 11.8 x (syllables/words) – 15.59.

Coleman-Liau Index

5.89 x (characters/words) – 0.3 x (sentences/words) – 15.8.

SMOG (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook) Index

1.0430 × √(30 × (Number of Polysyllables / Number of Sentences)) + 3.1291.

Readability calculators estimate your text's readability but don't identify specific areas that are hard to read. This is why we recommend using readability calculators at the end of the editorial process. To discover the readability score of your text and know which parts need to be improved, use Hemingway Editor.

In the screenshot above, Hemingway Editor tells us the readability score of the content and highlights sentences that need improvement.
